Eight hockey teams converged on Riverwood, Sydney a couple of weekends ago to fight it out for the coveted interstate Unicycle Hockey Cup.

Revesby A were tipped take out the cup, with a strong team headed by Ashely Curtis. They did not disappoint.

But the big surprise came from the Northern Beaches Unicycle Club, Sydney. Having only been in operation since mid 2012, NBUC fielded two teams, one of which took out second place - snatching that honour from Sydney Hockey! Hats off to Charlie Allum for getting some hockey action going north of the bridge and getting his teams' skills up so quickly.

So here's how it went down: Revesby A - 1st place, NBUC A - 2nd place, Sydney Hockey Orange - 3rd place.

Congrats to all the other teams that took part: Canberra A and B, Sydney Hockey Black, NBUC B and Revesby B. Many thanks to all the organisers - especially to Ashley for arranging the event and fantastic facilities, to Cris for admin and insurance, and to the refs on the day.

Huge thanks to all the teams who participated, especially those who journeyed up from Canberra and Melbourne. Thanks too to all the supporters - with a shout out to Jess who monitored the team draws. It was a great tournament and we can't wait for the next one - hopefully before Uninats.

Here's the latest news on this Sundays' Interstate Unicycle Hockey competition, from Ashley Curtis:

So far we are looking like an 8 team comp. 2 teams for each Revesby, Canberra, Sydney & Northern Beaches.

If your team hasn't registered, or you wish to join a team, let me know asap. There are a couple of spots on teams avaliable.

Also we will be introducing the start of the trial process to make the Australian unicycle hockey team for APUC in December - A set of standard skills you can be tested for.

I am going to Germany to play on a unicycle hockey team for the best part of this year, leaving on January 29th. Nic Vevers & Luke Hilderbraat will take over as co-captains for the Australian Unicycle Hockey Team to help organise team selections and training leading up to APUC.

I am planning to be back for APUC so i'll see you guys there, or this weekend.

Ok people, gear up for our one day Hockey Tournament - with the perpetual hockey trophy up for grabs. Please direct any questions about this event to Ashley Curtis (0414 321 150) or Luke Hilderbraat. Here's all the details:

Date: 8:00am sharp - 3:30pm, Sunday 20 January 2013. Yes, it's an early start but we have to be off the court on time, as wheelchair rugby players are training at 4pm - stick around to check that out if you want.

Where: Morris Iemma Indoor Sports Center (Riverwood YMCA), Cnr Belmore Rd and the M5 Riverwood, Sydney.

Cost & AUS membership: Cost is $10 per rider. This is an Australian Unicycle Society (AUS) event so you will need to be an AUS member to play - see the AUS web site for membership details.

Teams and individuals: We want TEAMS to register their attendance so get your teams organised. We want to know how many teams will be here in advance so the schedule will be ready to go at the start of the day, as it's an early finish (contact: Ashley Curtis  or 0414 321 150) . If you do not have enough players to make up a team, let me know that you are coming at least a week before the event and we will find you a team. Team Captains let me know what your teams are. We are expecting at least one team each from Revesby, Sydney, Northern Beaches and Canberra. We would love to also have teams or players from Melbourne, Northern Territory and any other unicycle hockey enthusiasts.

The Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is just around the corner! I can't find the words to tell you how great it feels to know that together we ARE making a difference in the fight against cancer!

 

You may or may not of heard, I had a nasty crash on my unicycle while training last week...I have had the week off training and my scabs are healing! however my right heel is still really bruised and i'm unable to put weight on it without pain! :-S I'm still planning to do the ride however! So your help would be even more appreciated to help me get over the line.

 

I have until October 27 to exceed my goal and I need your help getting there. Will you please sponsor me now?

The ride is on the weekend of 24th-25th of Movember, in Chiltern, Victoria.

There are a range of ride options with a choice of distances and terrains, so something for every uni rider.

Uninats, with added APUC!

It's official -  ACT Unicycle Riders will be the hosts for Uninats 2013, the Australian Unicycle Championships, between the 12th and 16th of December 2013 in Canberra ACT.

In turn, Uninats 2013 will be the host for the 4th Asia Pacific Unicycle Championships (APUC).

Australia will be hosting international riders from Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea and hopefully Japan and the Phillipines at the 2013 Uninats, which will be held

Hosting APUC will give all Australian riders a chance to meet, ride and compete with great overseas unicyclists, and gives us a chance to repay the hospitality provided to Australians in every host country at previous Asia-Pacific events.

As an official event of the Canberra 100 centenary celebrations, Uninats 2013 will benefit from the experienced organising team from ACTURS and also the great venues and facilities in our national capital.

Keep watching the AUS website for further information as the detailed program is confirmed and we can open registrations.

Why December?

Finding dates which align with holidays and school breaks across Asia meant that next December was the best option, despite it being late in the year and quite a wait from the last Uninats.

To make sure you get your unicycling fix, AUS would like to organise as many 'mini' events as possible in the next year to keep everyone busy. If you would like to run an event day or weekend in your area, please get in touch!

Ben Davis is looking to meet up with other unicyclists and explore Newcastle - he's especially interested in trials unicycling. He will be free most of this week. If you want to meet up, please contact Ben directly.

Well, we're back from Unicon 16, unicycles unpacked and thousands of photos to sort through. It was a fantastic event and congratulations to all the Australian participants who took part: Ennio from Perth, Joseph from Darwin, Trevor and Dan from Brisbane, David and Jackie from Canberra, Ben, Christine, Cris, Jamey and Rochelle from Sydney, and George from Melbourne. Also a shout out to Tynan from Vancouver, and Brian and Tony from New Zealand who obliged by playing on the Australian hockey team. We had great fun catching up with friends from around the world and making new ones.

Set beneath the truely awesome Dolomite mountains, the picturesque Italian town of Brixen/Bressanone really embraced the Unicon, inviting over 2000 unicyclists to make as much use of the town and surrounds as possible. Unicon kicked off with a grand gathering at the main stadium. Following the whip cracking entertainment, riders and their supporters led a parade through town to the main piazza for a welcome by the mayor and town brass band, and a demonstration of schuhplattler or traditional folk dance. Brixen/Bressanone has much to offer the unicycle tourist, great cycle paths, hiking, mountain cycling, Aquarena water park, plenty of beer, pasta/pizza and, not to be missed, Thursday party nights – which were a great surprise – we loved the traditional costumes sported by some revelers in town!
